Russia remains one of the highest-volume destinations for Chinese land freight, and 2026 has brought a notable improvement for its westernmost region: a new regular multimodal service to Kaliningrad. This guide explains the main shipping routes from China to Russia — and how the exclave gets supplied.

Rate Overview
| Mode | Typical Cost (2026) | Door-to-Door Transit | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rail (FCL) | 40′HQ ≈ $4,000–7,000 | 18–25 days to Moscow | Bulk, machinery, consumer goods |
| Truck TIR | LCL from 1 CBM; FTL per truck | 12–18 days | General cargo, time-sensitive freight |
| Far East sea + rail/road | Per container; below rail rates | 25–35 days | Cost-sensitive volume |
| Air freight | ≈ $5–9/kg | 6–12 days | Urgent, high-value goods |
Rail & Truck to Moscow and Beyond
Block trains exit China at Manzhouli, Zabaikalsk or Alashankou and reach Moscow hubs in 18–25 days door to door. TIR trucking via the same land borders runs 12–18 days and remains the most flexible option for groupage from 1 CBM. Far East sea services to Vladivostok/Vostochny (Wrangel Bay), followed by rail across Russia, offer the lowest per-unit cost for volume cargo at 25–35 days.
Kaliningrad: The New Multimodal Service
Kaliningrad — Russia’s exclave on the Baltic — is now served by a regular multimodal chain launched in 2026: containers ship by sea to Wrangel Bay in the Far East, clear customs, travel by block train to St. Petersburg’s First Container Terminal, then move by feeder vessel to the Port of Kaliningrad and by truck to local factories. Trains run every 12–14 days with total transit of about 25 days. Direct sea rotations from Shanghai, Ningbo and Taicang to St. Petersburg and onward to Kaliningrad take roughly 42–56 days. Our Kaliningrad country page covers delivery across the region.
Customs & Certification
- VAT: 20% on most imports; duties follow the EAEU Common External Tariff.
- EAC certification: required for most electronics, appliances, machinery and children’s goods.
- Payments & compliance: settlement and screening requirements evolve; work with a forwarder who operates the routes daily.
Under DDP shipping from China, we handle export clearance, all transit legs, Russian import clearance, duty and VAT, and delivery to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kaliningrad or regional cities under one all-in rate. For oversized industrial equipment see our project cargo service.
